What's actually going wrong

Most golfers practice putting by hitting balls until they 'feel good.' That's why nothing carries over to the course. A real putting fix starts with a diagnosis: is your face angle open at impact? Is your stroke too long? Is your tempo inconsistent under pressure?

Once you know the actual fault, the drills become effective. kAI's putting analyzer measures face angle, stroke path, tempo ratio, and head movement so you can spend your practice time on the thing that actually moves your stats.

Drills that actually work

Drill 1: Gate Drill (Putting Edition)

Guarantees a square face and on-line stroke through impact.

  1. Set two tees just outside the toe and heel of your putter at the ball.
  2. Hit 10-footers, trying to roll the putter cleanly through the gate.
  3. Clipping the outside tee = a push; the inside tee = a pull.
  4. Aim for 10 clean strokes in a row.

Drill 2: Coin Drill for Strike

Trains a pure roll by isolating where you contact the ball.

  1. Stick a small coin on the back of the ball with a piece of tape (or use a marker dot).
  2. Putt 5-footers focused only on hitting the coin/dot dead center.
  3. Off-center strikes will telegraph as a slight wobble or off-line roll.

Drill 3: 1-2-3 Lag Ladder

Builds distance control on long putts where most 3-putts happen.

  1. Drop balls at 20, 30, and 40 feet from one hole.
  2. Putt 3 from each distance, trying to leave every putt inside a 3-foot circle around the hole.
  3. Track your make-or-tap-in percentage across 9 putts.

Frequently asked

What's the most important part of the putting stroke?

Face angle at impact accounts for ~83% of starting direction on a putt. Get the face square and most of your misses disappear.

How long should my putting stroke be?

It should be symmetric — backstroke length should roughly equal follow-through length. Decelerating into impact is a top-3 cause of pulled putts.

Can kAI analyze my putting from a phone video?

Yes — switch to Putting mode in the kAI app. The AI evaluates face angle, path, tempo, and head movement from a single down-the-line or face-on video.
