Junior Golf Swing Tips That Actually Stick

The best young players share three things: a good grip, a balanced finish, and a swing they OWN. Here's how to build all three without overcoaching.

What's actually going wrong

Most junior golfers get over-instructed. They hear about hip rotation, swing plane, and shaft lean before they've even built a balanced finish. The result is overthinking, tension, and an early plateau.

Great junior coaches focus on three things only: grip, balance, and rhythm. Master those, and the technical details fall into place naturally as the body matures. This page covers the highest-leverage drills for ages 8–17.

Watch: Three drills every junior should know

Drills that actually work

Drill 1: The 5-Second Finish

Teaches balance — the single biggest predictor of long-term swing health.

  1. Hit any club at 80% effort.
  2. Hold the finish position for 5 full seconds — belt buckle to the target, back foot on its toe.
  3. If you fall off balance, you swung too hard. Reset and try again.
  4. Do 20 reps every practice session.

Drill 2: Grip Pressure Check

Stops the death-grip that creates tension and kills rhythm.

  1. On a scale of 1–10 (10 = squeezing a stress ball as hard as possible), set your grip at a 4.
  2. Make slow practice swings keeping the pressure constant.
  3. Have a parent or coach gently try to pull the club out of your hands at address — they should be able to.

Drill 3: Step Drill for Rhythm

Builds a smooth tempo by syncing the lower body with the swing.

  1. Start with your feet together, ball in front of your trail foot.
  2. Step your lead foot toward the target as you start the backswing.
  3. Plant the lead foot at the top, then swing down naturally.
  4. Great for ages 8–12; teaches sequencing without any 'hip rotation' jargon.

Frequently asked

What age should a junior start golf lessons?

Most pros suggest formal lessons around age 6–8, once the child can focus for 30 minutes. Before that, focus on FUN — chipping into buckets, putting contests, anything that builds love for the game.

Should juniors take big swings or smooth swings?

Smooth, balanced swings every time. Power comes from technique and physical growth — chasing speed early creates compensations that take years to undo.

How much should a junior practice?

Quality over quantity. 30 focused minutes 3x/week beats 3 hours of mindless ball-beating. Use kAI to give them concrete feedback so the time counts.

Yes — kAI's coaching tone adapts to the golfer's age and skill level when you set up a Junior profile. Feedback is encouraging and concrete, not technical.
