Tempo Drills That Build a Repeatable Swing

Tour pros all swing on a 3:1 ratio — backswing three times longer than downswing. Train it once and your strike improves everywhere.

What's actually going wrong

Most amateurs swing way too fast on the way down relative to their backswing. The result is poor sequencing: arms beat the body, the club gets stuck, and contact suffers. Tempo isn't about swinging slow — it's about swinging in the right RATIO.

The good news: tempo is the single easiest swing trait to train. Five minutes of these drills before each range session, and you'll feel a different golf swing inside two weeks.

Drills that actually work

Drill 1: The 1-2-3 Count Drill

Builds the 3:1 backswing-to-downswing ratio every great player owns.

  1. Count '1-2-3' on the way back (three full beats from address to the top).
  2. Count '1' on the way down (one beat from the top to impact).
  3. Use a metronome at 60 BPM or count out loud.
  4. Hit half-swing 8-irons until the cadence is automatic.

Drill 2: Feet-Together Drill

Forces a balanced, smooth tempo because over-swinging makes you fall over.

  1. Set up with your feet touching and a 7-iron.
  2. Make full swings at 70% power.
  3. Any over-acceleration shows up immediately as a loss of balance.
  4. Do 15 reps before transitioning to your normal stance — your tempo will carry over.

Drill 3: Three-Tempo Range Routine

Trains your nervous system to find the same tempo regardless of pressure.

  1. Hit one ball at 50% effort, focused only on smoothness.
  2. Hit the next at 75% effort.
  3. Hit the next at 90% effort.
  4. Repeat the cycle for 30 balls. You'll discover your real 'tour tempo' is closer to 80%, not 100%.

Frequently asked

What's the ideal golf swing tempo?

A 3:1 ratio between backswing and downswing time. Tour averages range from roughly 21:7 (Ernie Els-smooth) to 24:8 (a touch quicker), but the RATIO is identical.

Will swinging slower hurt my distance?

No — sequencing creates distance, not raw effort. Most amateurs lose 10+ MPH of clubhead speed by being out-of-sync. Better tempo usually adds yards.

How do I know if my tempo is off?

Record your swing and have kAI analyze the backswing-to-downswing ratio. The AI flags rushed transitions and over-the-top moves caused by tempo problems.
